Leon Keyserling papers, 1930-1987 (bulk, 1976-1987).

Bulk of collection is Keyserling's (LHK) professional records in original order. Correspondence series contains letters between LHK and economists, politicians, Democratic organizations, researchers, book reviewers, students and friends. Includes critique and discussion about The New Deal Lawyers, by Peter Irons, and requests for Keyserling's recollections on the Wagner Act and Council of Economic Advisors. Business records contain transcripts from LHK's court cases including 1967 railroad lawsuit before the Supreme Court. Individual economist files contain publications and correspondence with Keyserling. Related series of publications, letters and speeches Keyserling prepared for others include material related to Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act, prepared for Rep. Augustus Hawkins. Series of speeches (typescripts) LHK presented at conferences and symposiums and testimonials he gave before courts and congressional committees; majority of testimonials are transcripts from hearings before the House Education and Labor Committee on Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act. Includes audio and video recordings of Leon and Mary Keyserling's speeches and interviews. Keyserling's personal papers contain biographical notes, copies of his birth certificate and will; news clippings about his marriage and career; annotated typescripts of his original poetry; resume of career achievements; photographs from National Housing Hall of Fame ceremony; obituaries and the program from his memorial service. Notable among personal papers is a legal brief prepared by LHK in 1930 for the Harvard Law School Ames Competition. Mary Dublin Keyserling material includes biographical information and "Career Record"; copy of her will; list of articles published; correspondence re. her husband's life and death and news clippings re. her career.

Leon Keyserling was born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1908. He grew up on the coastal island of St. Helena (SC) and later moved to Beaufort. Keyserling graduated from Beaufort High School at age 16 and attended Columbia University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. After receiving a degree from Harvard Law School, he taught economics at Columbia University and conducted research for the Rockefeller Foundation.
